2010 Season Summary (mid season)
The North Coast organization continued its progress to fielding a solid Grade IV competition band by focusing over the off season on the prospect of taking on the formidable task of competing in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow Scotland, August 2010. Most of our members have never been there and for those of us who have, it is quite the spectacle of pipe band competition. Over 200 bands from all over the world travel to Glasgow each year to compete in 7 band divisions. North Coast decided that the learning experience of attending such an event, and striving to be able to compete there would be beneficial to the program and so we began putting finances and competition required resources in place over the winter. In the meantime, the band has begun its 2010 competition season with two first place finishes at the Ohio Games on June 26th. Out of the 8 sectional judge scores, the North Coast took 7 firsts!. There is still much to do to elevate the band's competition ability for Glasgow, but we are well on our way. Stay tuned for the rest of the 2010 news as it unfolds.
2009 Season Summary
The North Coast organization continued its methodology of teaching and inclusion in 2009, and fielded a handful of new members. Results on the competition field were elevated from 2008 and many top of the grade level performances were accomplished. The band won at the Ohio Games in June, and won two events at the Detroit games in August. The band came in close second at Ligonier Games in September to the Ontario Grade IV 2009 circuit champion. All of the members felt very pleased with such a rewarding season and efforts began in the fall to focus on an even bigger goal, competing at the World Pipe Band Championships in August of 2010! Fund raising efforts are currently underway for this and the band is already working hard to determine what will be required to take this on in 2010. Wish the band luck, and if you are interested in getting on board for this upcoming season, please stop in and join the group. We'd be happy to have you.
2008 Season Summary
The North Coast organization took the 2007 season and began a new chapter in the program. We focused on student development and pipe band fundamentals. The band did not have an active competition group in 2007, but carried on with our educational programs and public performances. After the conclusion of the 2007 season, it was decided that our teaching and restructuring efforts had progressed far enough to enable us to put out a competing group in 2008. The competing group registered with the Midwest Pipe Band Association in Grade IV and competed twice this year, at the Ohio Games and at the Ligonier Games. It was noted at Ohio, our first contest for the new competing group, that we fielded many members who had never competed before and utilized new leadership that had never led in competition previously. On the day, we fielded one new snare drummer, two new pipers, three new tenors, a new bass drummer, a new lead drummer and a new Pipe Major. The band put on a respectable show and was pleased with the effort. At Ligonier, we survived a torrential downpour and having to wait in it for 15 minutes while the judges tried to get ready in the rain. The band put on a decent performance considering the weather and everyone was pleased that we survived it, actually finding the whole thing quite funny.
Now that the year is done, we are getting ready to start a new round of beginner classes and welcome new members into the band for 2009. It is our hope to take on another contest or two and to have a lot of fun along the way. Many new and exciting things on the horizon including a new band recording, some new educational seminars, some instructor workshops, and a band weekend trip out of town. Thanks to everyone for all the past support and to the members for working so hard to make this a great place to be.
2007 Season Summary
The North Coast Pipe Band suspended its competitive effort for 2007 as the program was simply understaffed to be viable. But, due to the large student base, the program is very healthy again and will continue its noncompetitive performance schedule of several parades, public shows and performances as usual. It is hoped that through the experiences that our students and new members receive by participating in these activities that we may have enough members with sufficient experience and skill to field a competitive group once again in 2008. If we are able to do so, it will be almost an entirely new group of members and the band will likely seek to reform in Grade IV to allow these new members to gain required skills and experiences at the most appropriate entry level competition grade.
2006 Season Summary
The North Coast Pipe Band would like to thank all of our friends and families who have supported the band through the past season. Coping with major attrition, the band put on its best face and carried on. Lots of sacrifice by the members made for a rewarding sense of accomplishment even though we were understaffed for the grade we are in.
The Grade III band will discontinue competitive outlets for 2007. Rather, the band will focus its energy on establishing educational training programs and participating in noncompetitive performances. It is hoped that the training will progress well enough for us to assemble another competitive group in the Fall, to hit the competition field again in 2008.
Tune in from time to time to see how things are going.
